Rebirth

Those who follow the theory that each individual is an insignificant part of the universe were dealt a serious blow in reason last September. You can think about how tiny the Earth looks in pictures taken from satellites. Go ahead and think about every night that you stared up at the sky marveling at the infinity and your place within, but then remember this, it was one man and his twisted ideals and rationale that spurred this very significant devastation upon us one year ago.

We are smart enough to know that what drives a villain is the belief that he is the hero of his own story. And as long as there are people who will buy into his next chapter, we must remain on alert. In that regard, nothing has changed over the past year. But, I'll tell you something else that hasn't changed either, we still live in America, Land of the Free.

And that's the main lesson I took away from September 11th, I love my freedom. But what's more, I love the opportunity my freedom allows me. Now is the time to embrace that. Too many people allow life to come to them, settling for the day-to-day, accepting the routine as an unwritten, self-imposed law. I see each day, each week, each month as an unpainted canvas and maybe some days I'll use oils and a thin brush and maybe some days I'll grab some spray paint and graffiti the hell out of it, but no matter what, I'm going to experience something. And not every painting is going to be a masterpiece, but at least I'm living in a world that has some of my art hanging around the landscape.
In the premier edition of RAZOR nearly two years ago, while dissertating on the mission of the magazine, I mentioned that you have two choices: play life or let life play you. Never has this been more true. And it's not about life being fleeting or adopting the philosophy of living life to the fullest. It goes deeper than any ancient proverb or inspirational poster. It goes to the very core of who you are as a human being and what you're willing to do with the one vehicle you completely have control of, yourself.

There is a saying that with every death there is an awakening. The deaths of some 3000 people awakened a nation and as insane and irrational the loss, for that reason alone, none died in vain. For me, the entire event awakened my soul, my spirit, my drive and my desire.

Shortly after September 11th, we were told to live life as usual. I say the hell with that. Accept the changes and do something positive with them. Get out of living life as usual. Start doing the things you've been thinking about for years. Kill the excuses. You can live in a fish bowl or you can swim in the ocean. With all apologies to John Mellencamp, your life is now. And if not now, then when?

Insignificance is a state of mind. So is a sense of fulfillment.

Peace.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire RAZOR family continue to be with all those directly affected by the tragedies of September 11th, 2001.

Enjoy the Issue,
